Anja Paerson back on track
Over a year after her 40th World Cup win in Austria, Anja Paerson finally managed to win another major competition today at St. Moritz where she captured the second Super-combined of the season thanks two strong runs in Super-G and slalom.
The 28-year-old finished ahead of Austria’s promising Michaela Kirchgasser and top-favourite Lindsey Vonn who didn’t take extra risks in the slalom run to be sure to score some ‘heavy points’ in that event after Maria Riesch’s DNF in the Super-G leg.
Second season win for Maria Riesch
As Anja Pärson who had to wait a year to celebrate another World Cup triumph, Germany’s Maria Riesch has been looking for a long time for another downhill win – since December 2006, when she was the fastest at Lake Louise, Canada. Finally the 25-year-old from Garmisch-Partenkirchen managed to remain in the lead throughout the entire race on Saturday, while the US American Lindsey Vonn could not do better than 5th after making a huge mistake in the upper part of the tricky ‘Corviglia’ course. It was Maria Riesch’s 13th World Cup win since January 2004.
Lindsey Vonn back to 'Business as Usual'
A day after failing to reach her first podium in a speed event for a long time USA’s Lindsey Vonn made it clear on Sunday that she was not ready at all to loosen her grip on women ski racing. After a nearly flawless run down the superbly prepared ‘Corviglia’ course, the double World Champion finally managed to win her first ever World Cup race in St. Moritz – her 9th this season and the 31st of her career. It’s also her 60th Top-3 finish in a World Cup event.
